Standing to outstanding

THERE is so much loss among many men and women who have failed to optimize their value in their lifetime, not because they lack value but because they have missed discovering the power within.

A good life involves living in harmony with one’s inner nature and understanding the true nature of reality (Plato). Happiness is the meaning and purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence (Aristotle). The ultimate goal of life is not just to live life but to live a good, meaningful and virtuous life guided by reason, virtue and moral principles (Socrates).

The meaning of life

The question of the meaning of life is one that interests us all. The question itself is ambiguous and vague. Philosophers and religions, through time, ask questions like the origin of everything, why must we suffer and how do we overcome it, how one must live to be in accord with principles, the identity and nature of the true self, and with the question of how to live. Others have talked about the goal or end of life and how to reach it through the vanity or futility of everything, and wondered how to deal with it. Others wondered about the good and how to achieve it while some mused on cosmic insignificance.

In asking about the meaning of life, one may be asking about the essence of life, about life’s purpose, about whether — and how — anything matters.

The sense-making question on the meaning of life can range from seeking life from its core or kernel — the inner reality or true essence — to the discovery of preexisting purpose or meaning to give life to others. Others define the meaning of life through the lasting achievement of legacy that cannot be destroyed by time. From a narrative or picture, empirical or metaphorical, to achieving sense by living it. Others don’t bother with the question as there is neither rhyme nor reason to it. Certainly, it makes sense to answer the question “is life worth living?”

The meaning of life is given a wide variety of perspectives. The meaning of life is to deny it in the phenomenal world which is an awful place citing that the meaning of life is the will (Schopenhauer); to obey God passionately (Kierkegaard); or the will to power (Nietzsche); and lies in a kind of irrational knowledge called faith (Tolstoy). Life is meaningful and worth living because of a spiritual order in which we should believe (James).

There are pessimistic perspectives like Shakespeare’s in “Macbeth,” who characterizes life as “a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.” The meaning of life is to be found in play, and in your youth, hence the key to a fully meaningful life would be to stay forever young (Schlick); that the question of the meaning of life is itself meaningless (Ayer). Life is meaningless but urges us nonetheless to make a free choice that would give our lives meaning and responsibility as we become the foundation of our own being (Sartre). Life is absurd and meaningless unless we cope by living with passion, using everything up, and with an attitude of revolt, defiance and scorn against the cold meaningless world (Camus).

The meaning of life is to live authentically (focused authenticity) or (alternatively) to be a guardian of the earth (Heidegger). To live a meaningful life, one must abandon private and petty interests, and instead cultivate an interest in the eternal (Russell). We can see life’s meaning when everything, including his individual life, is one unified whole, hence, life is part of a great unity of meaning (Tagore).

There is no sense in asking what is the ultimate purpose of our existence, or what is the real meaning of life, but a person can give his life a meaning, and if he does, it will be meaningful to him (Ayer). Give your life a meaning, and that’s the meaning it will have.

‘Standing to outstanding’

Looking back in my life, and the diversity is my achievements as a multi-licensed professional, social entrepreneur, media personality, social advocate, philanthropist, business leader, best-selling author, record and movie producer, writer, and more, I can’t help but wonder how I was able to achieve those in my 55 years of life.

From the province of Oriental Mindoro, I have consistently stood out in every room I enter, from the classroom to the global stage. I am now known as a doctor of education and of humanities, nurse-midwife-licensed teacher and social entrepreneur; multi-awarded, with The Outstanding Filipino award, Agora Award, Mansmith Award, UST TOTAL award, DOST Science Ambassador, among others, with over 80 million monthly social media engagement across various platforms. The Dr. Carl E. Balita Review Center has become a brand leader that bridged a million professionals. I am the host of several multi-awarded shows on radio and television. Beyond the accolades, I am a family man, married to Dr. Lyne Balita, with whom I have four children: lawyer Lyca, engineer Lambert, nurse Lyza and architecture student Lyra.

Framework for meaningful personal branding

On my 55th birthday, I am launching the book “Standing to Outstanding,” inspired by my life lessons and principles, co-authored by Mr. Adrian Tabalanza and lawyer Lyca Balita. It provides the framework for meaningful personal branding through self-mastery (Stand up), synchronicity (Standard), supremacy (Stand out) and prosperity (Outstanding). The book provides for a seamless narrative of life applications of these principles.

Stand-up framework presents principles that upgrade the person’s unique being upon seeking the individual self and embracing the willingness to try and fail in the process, with agility to learn through life experiences and circumstances. In this chapter, nurturing of the values, the north star of the person, anchors the person’s proactive decision to change — go, grow and glow intentionally.

Standard framework ushers the reader through the search and understanding of the norm that is defined by the society toward its defiance. In between, the ironic searching for the norm for the purpose of its defiance, is the intention to not only survive but to thrive in being uniquely different, unmindful of the risk of being rejected. Then follows the creation of a productive network of his kind. It brings the reward of Synchronicity, where the unique being is set free to express its best version of self-harmonization with the world that values such freedom and individuality.

Standout principles lead to an outburst, a state where the person’s presence cannot be ignored, as one shines and transforms to excel toward the self-determined and shared vision. The person needs to adapt to lead as success is navigated collectively and destiny is designed and claimed meaningfully. Outstanding principles develop outcomes, the end in mind, that are ingrained in the person’s personal branding and legacy. Here is where sharpening the purpose aligns the unique stories about a great person who has nestled in happiness in the pursuit of joy.

Another book is immortalizing me, at 55.
